Recap, Sep 8, 2026

We cashed it. Astros 6–5 at Citizens Bank Park, and the margin was Daulton Varsho (Astros CF) going to right-center in the seventh for his 11th — the run Houston needed once Philadelphia started climbing back.

The starter thesis held. Hayden Wesneski (Astros RHP) went six, three earned, five hits, no walks, and took the win. Andrew Painter (Phillies RHP) went five and gave up ten hits and five earned. The 5.55 showed up; the quiet night didn't. Houston built it early — Christian Walker (Astros 1B) hit a three-run shot in the second for his 25th, Jeremy Peña (Astros SS) doubled Cam Smith home, and Smith (Astros RF) went deep in the fourth for his 18th and a 5–0 lead.

Fade risk showed up late, and not from the starter. Philadelphia took three in the sixth on a Kyle Schwarber (Phillies DH) RBI single and a Trea Turner (Phillies SS) two-run homer, then Brandon Marsh (Phillies LF) doubled in another in the seventh. Josh Hader (Astros LHP) gave a run back in the ninth on an Edmundo Sosa (Phillies PH) double and finished it with the tying run standing on second — save number 24.

Snaps the two-game skid.
