Recap, Sep 9, 2026

We smashed the over. Nationals 2, Padres 9 — eleven runs, Over 8.5 cashed clean.

First pitch 4:10 ET at Petco. Jackson Kent (Nationals RHP) lasted three innings with five earned and took the loss. Walker Buehler (Padres RHP) only made it through 2.1 with two earned before the bullpen took over. The posted eight never had a chance once San Diego’s middle innings opened up.

Jackson Merrill (Padres CF) owned the night — 4-for-5, two homers (23rd and 24th), a triple, six RBI. Keibert Ruiz (Nationals C) went deep for his 10th to put Washington up early, and that was basically the road club’s highlight. Ty France (Padres 1B) and Fernando Tatis Jr. (Padres 2B) kept the line moving.

Thesis held the ugly way: two starters worse than the league shape and clubs that score. Kent’s thin sample showed. Petco’s home stinginess was the fade — it did not show up with eleven on the board.

Cool night in San Diego. The total was never in doubt after the third.
